FMEA and Risks Assessment for Thermochemical Energy Storage Systems Based on Carbonates

Thermochemical energy storage systems from carbonates, mainly those based on calcium carbonate, have been gaining momentum in the last few years. However, despite considerable interest process, Technology Readiness Level (TRL) is still low. Therefore, facing progressive development of technology at different scales essential to carry out a comprehensive risk assessment and Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) process guarantee safety operation systems. In this study, methodology was applied first-of-its-kind prototype, it valuable tool for assessing safe design potential scaling up. The present work describes carrying these analyses construct kW-scale prototype an system carbonate. main risks occur during testing stages (>50% identified risks), being derived overheating reactors, failures control solar shape receiver, system. Through Risk Priority Numbers (RPNs), that issues requiring more attention are related hot fluid path avoid loss heat transfer damages (personal facilities), due their probability (>8 scale 10). results FMEA analysis show need specific measures especially calciner, with high temperatures (1000 °C) effects corrosion.
